People & Place

Chalo Fernandez, Las Palmas Farming Community

Chalo Fernandez is a fifth generation, quality-focused specialty coffee farmer. His family has been producing coffee for over 150 years, and his company – aptly named Chalo’s Coffee – is 100% family owned and operated. Chalo can often be found visiting the roastery and speaks passionately about the importance of direct trade relationships, sustainability, and supporting his vibrant community in Huila.

The Land

Huila, Colombia

Huila is a mountainous department in the southwest of Colombia that enjoy two harvests per year: the main harvest (April - June) and the smaller Mitaca fly crop (September - November). Coffees grow between 1,450 and 2,000 metres above sea level, including Castillo, Caturra, Pink Bourbon, Pacamara, and many other varieties. Huila is also a leader in the fight against climate change. Plan Huila 2050 is the first comprehensive climate change plan for a department in Colombia.
