People & Place

Various Smallholders, Kunjin

Kunjin comes from smallholder coffee producers in Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands, where families farm 1–2 hectare plots with about 2,500 coffee trees per hectare. They grow coffee alongside household crops, and cherries are processed at local stations for export. This community effort helps small producers access specialty markets while maintaining regional coffee diversity.

The Land

Wahgi Valley, Western Highlands

Nestled in Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands, the Wahgi Valley is among the country's top coffee regions. Coffee grows between 1,400 and 1,900 meters, where cool temperatures slow cherry ripening, enhancing sweetness and complexity. Rugged terrain and remote farms have fostered a unique coffee culture. Smallholder farms produce balanced coffees with gentle acidity and sweetness.
